  • How Does SCOUT work?

    SCOUT uses a tiny device called a reflector that is placed at the tumor site prior to the day of surgery. The reflector is completely passive until activated in the operating room. The system then uses radar waves (safe and non-radioactive) to detect the location of the reflector within the breast. The system guides your doctor in locating and removing both the tumor and the reflector during surgery.
  • Why is SCOUT different?

    Prior to SCOUT, the most common approach for localizing breast tumors was wire localization. With wire localization, a radiologist must guide a thin, hooked wire through the skin to the tumor location, the surgeon then uses the wire to locate the tumor. The procedure must be done on the morning of surgery. With this older type of localization, the time between the wire placement and surgery can be several hours, elevating worry and discomfort. The SCOUT reflector can be conveniently placed prior to your surgery date at any time during your diagnosis or treatment.
  • How and when is the reflector placed?

    The reflector will be placed at the tumor site on a day prior to your scheduled surgery. During the placement your physician will:
    • Confirm the location of the lump using imaging (mammography or ultrasound)
    • Use a local anesthetic to numb the targeted area of your breast
    • Introduce the reflector through a small needle under image guidance
    • Confirm the placement of the reflector using the SCOUT Check
    • After placement, you can resume normal activity
    • You will not feel the reflector
