Moores Cancer CenterThe SAVI Applicator:
Reduce Complications, Treat More Women

At the 2009American Society of Breast Surgeons annual meeting last month, researchers from

the Moores Cancer Center

at UC San Diego and 21st Century Oncology presented the results of

their study – Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation via SAVI: One Year Follow-up.

With a median

follow-up of 18 months, this study represents the longest follow-up on

treatment with the SAVI applicator presented to date.

In addition to treating small

breasts and small lumpectomy cavities, the results indicate a significant

reduction in complications typically associated with balloon brachytherapy. Cosmetic

results have been outstanding with no local recurrences or persistent seroma.

39% percent of patients had skin

separation of 7 mm or less – making them ineligible for treatment with balloon

“With greater

than a full year of follow-up, our research confirms previous findings that

this device is safe and effective for radiation delivery,” said study author

Catheryn Yashar, M.D. of UCSD. “Without the ability to customize the dose,

other devices may lead to complications, like persistent seroma and skin burns.

[SAVI] was created to overcome these problems, and our research shows it has

been successful.”
