The RVarianadiation Boom:
Education Offers Better Treatment, Minimizes Harm

In January, The New York Times reported on the rising incidence of medical radiation errors and their crippling effects on patients' lives. The article argues that while new technology allows physicians to deliver more sophisticated treatment, its rising complexity has created new opportunities for error.

James B. Stubbs, Ph.D., Cianna Medical's Chief Science Officer, speaks out about how to improve radiation safety as technology evolves -- including what every physician and physicist should expect to receive from its technology vendors. Read More
SAVI Meets Social Media:
Methodist Healthcare Uses Twitter to Chronicle Patient's Care
Houston
On March 4, Methodist Healthcare hosted its first in a series of Twittercasts focusing on women's health services. The Twittercast featured the SAVI applicator and followed a patient throughout the entire process, including placement, treatment fractions and removal.

"People are spending three times as much time on social media sites now as they were a year ago," said Jill Fazakerly, director of marketing with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Inc. "We feel it's incumbent for us to be there with our message, to bring new treatment options and technologies closer to those who need them."  Read More

SAVI is offered at Methodist University Hospital, one of the seven hospitals within the Methodist system. The hospital is the first medical facility in Memphis to utilize the cutting edge technology.

Congress Delays Medicare Fee Reduction

On March 10, the U.S. Senate passed legislation that would delay a 21% cut in Medicare physician payments until after September 30. The legislation must now be approved by the House before it can go to the President for his signature.

What does this mean for physicians?
-The current conversion factor for physician payments will not change until October 2010, unless Congress approves a permanent fix.

-Any claims held by Medicare contractors pending the legislation will be released for payment immediately.

Visit opencongress.org for more information on the pending legislation or to contact your local Representative.
