SAVI Delivers for Rural Populations

Numerous studies show early-stage breast cancer patients in rural areas are more likely to choose mastectomy over breast conservation therapy compared to women in urban areas - most likely due to a lack of convenient access to radiation therapy.

Billings Clinic in Billings, Mont., serves a 4-state region, with some patients traveling from as far as 400 miles away. Ever since John Schallenkamp, M.D. became the clinic's first radiation oncologist in 2005, he wanted to start a breast brachytherapy program to offer patients a more convenient treatment option.

Read on to learn why Dr. Schallenkamp waited for the SAVI applicator to start the program -- and why he simply wasn't willing to offer balloon brachytherapy.
